Shellharbour Woodcarving and Pyrography Group Inc.
(A sub branch of Sydney Woodcarving Group )is a group of friendly warm inviting people who are dedicated to carving either "in the round" or "in relief" and woodburning known as Pyrography.
We are an eclectic bunch who love to share our knowledge with newcomers, be they experienced or inexperienced. There are many women and men in our group who carve and woodburn .
Wood sculpture in any form is a skill that takes a lot of patience, as our work is not achieved in a day, sometimes a piece can take 100 hours or more to complete. To do woodcarving special chisels are used, referred to as gouges, as they are quite different to those used by carpenters, in that they are curved at the tip to different degrees, depending upong the use.
For heavier work a rounded mallet is used, also a variety of knives for different types of work. At the Timber and Working with Wood Show held in Sydney, for anyone who works or just loves timber, we had a display stand with over 70 pieces of work on display made exclusively by our members.
Timbers worked are many and varied, but preference is given to Australian Timbers, Camphor Laurel, Cedar, Tasmanian Blackwood and Huon Pine, to name a few. For beginners we recommend Jelutong from Malaysia as it takes the chisel well and also details well.
Shellharbour Woodcarving and Pyrography Group always welcomes new members, and we meet at Wilga Close, Albion Park on the 3rd Saturday and first Monday of the month
Every friday
