SHELLHARBOUR WOODCARVERS
NEWS for meeting on Saturday 18th June, 2022
at 9.30am - 1.30pm in the Clubhouse, Wilga Close, Albion Park
News from Frank:
1. We had a demonstration by Bill Longhurst on Friday, 10th June. He did a very good job, and brought the Chess Set that was carved in 2007 by members of the 4 groups of the Sydney Woodcarving Group to show us. Bill demonstrated sharpening a ‘V’ tool. He also brought Fan Carvings to show. It was a good day.
2. The Gerringong Gallery Exhibition setting up is well under way. Flyers have been given to the adjoining Library for distribution to the public. Radio announcement is organised. Artwork has been put on Plywood for public to have a go at Pyrography, a screed has been sent to the Gallery to be placed on the notice board. We were short of tables but that has been overcome, by purchasing 3 tables and borrowing the rest. As we have not exhibited here before, we will just have to wait and see, but it looks like a good venue and will be ours from Tuesday 5th July (setup) to Sunday 10th July (packup). Members can sell carvings/pyrography items that week, Efpos machine ordered.
3. The large piece of timber we had dressed and sanded, has been discussed. Artwork was sought and now ready to apply to the slab. The thinking is we can carve the top, a member will make legs for it and Pyrography to turn it into a coffee table.
4. Members have been bringing in finished Pelicans, very nice.
5. We are asking that members bring in past workshop carvings for display at Gerringong. Turtles, Emperor Penguins, Pelicans, Possums - we can have a separate display of our Workshops. Please bring in before 5th July. Put your name on them, for later identification.
Best wishes, and hope you enjoy your time in Gerringong!
Regards,
Sandra Hamblen
Hi all SWGSh’ers!
Hope you are all getting through these times, and filling your lives with plenty of carving and planning for when you can once again buy timber, come to the Clubhouse, and share your work with us all.
This is how I am handling lockdown, in my “oodie”. Attached is a fabulous photo of our leader (Frank, if you don’t recognise him!!!). He has suggested that we have a sharing of YOUR photos too, about how you are filling in your time. Do we all want one of those “oodies”?
We have plenty to keep us going – with an 18 month old Border Collie who is the fastest runner on the headland, and we all have a chat while our 6-8 dogs run around with their friends, sharing balls which become slimier by the minute. However, in the meantime I finally have my bandsaw working again since we moved to my smaller workshop 5 years ago!!! Also have several meetings about our new museum which is now planned to open in September, almost 4 years since closing!!
You may like to check out on Google “Aboriginal Mens Group” and see what our neighbours at Wilga Close are doing. They are being very productive and helpful to the local community.
We look forward to a rush of photos to share!
Best wishes, keep warm (or cool today), well, and looking forward to our next meeting.
...Sandra
